When I left school I didn’t really know what I wanted in life,I actually thought I was going to become a massive failure, ( not even joking ). The only thing I knew was that I wanted to take photos, I didn’t really know what of, or even if I would still be doing it today.
In December 2011 I became self employed, the thought of even setting up my own business was ridiculously scary! I had to learn so many things and I am still learning. It’s scary not knowing when your next pay cheque would come through, or even if you would get any work at all!
That feeling never goes away when your self employed, you could have the busiest few months ever and suddenly BAM nothing for a few weeks… It’s scary.
Every client meeting is essentially an interview, you have to sell yourself, you have to be passionate about what you do, if your not passionate then people won’t believe in your work. The biggest thing is confidence… If your not confident about your work then why would anyone else want to invest in you? How can they be confident that you will deliver amazing photos for them? Being confident in your work is SO important, it has taken me years to finally be confident in what I can deliver. When I receive messages from people saying ‘the photos had me in tears-they are all so beautiful!’ That’s exactly why I do this! To create amazing memories for people so that in 10, 20 , 40 years time they can look back and remember that special day.
The biggest support for me to this date has been my family, friends and followers. For all the people who have followed my work constantly since seeing it for the first time. I thank you very much for all of your support, for giving me the support and constructed criticism I have needed to become better at what I do. Having that support is so important and I am lucky. I am still learning, still trying to improve my skills every single day. I don’t think I will ever want to stop trying to improve, every shoot I do I want the next one to be ten times better. Never stop wanting to learn, never stop wanting to succeed especially in something you are completely passionate about.
Sure, when times are hard you can sit back and think why am I still doing this? Other people are doing so much better than me…All you are doing is having constant negative thoughts. How is that going to help? How do you know if they are doing amazingly?
How do you know they aren’t thinking exactly what you are thinking? You don’t! So don’t worry about what other people are doing, concentrate on making yourself feel better, concentrate on making your business grow.
Think about what YOU want and where YOU want to be.
Forget about everyone else.
